Rediscovering My Roots: A Journey Back to Fort Adams, Mississippi

The Road Back to Fort Adams: Reconnecting with My Roots

Life’s unexpected twists led me back to Fort Adams, my father’s Mississippi hometown. The winding Mile Hill Road, once a thriving haven, now reveals an overgrown shack and a resilient fig tree. My resourceful grandmother, 30 miles from the nearest store, provided sustenance from her garden and chickens. Childhood memories of exploring pecan trees and turtle eggshells in the field behind her house flood my thoughts. As an adult, I reflect on the resilience of this African American community, hidden on the map but rich in history.

Fort Adams, nestled in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, may be a small dot on the map, but it holds a wealth of history and lessons in perseverance. The community’s remote location demanded resourcefulness, and my ancestors rose to the challenge. They built a life for themselves and their families despite the odds, relying on homegrown food and sheer determination.

Returning to Fort Adams has been a humbling experience. It reminds me of the importance of our roots and the stories they hold. As I reconnect with my past, I am filled with gratitude and inspiration for the future. The echoes of cornbread aromas, sweet rice desserts, and preserved figs linger, connecting me to a legacy of strength and resilience. 🌿🌱🌟
